  Rwanda
Description
Violence, massacres, and displacements have taken a toll on this nation whose original inhabitants were Twa Pygmies. With one physician for each 50,000 residents, life expectancy is only in the early 40's. A Belgian soldier stationed in Rwanda during World War I, falling in love with the beauty of the country and the intelligence of its people, was convinced that it would be a fruitful field. After the war, he and his family laid the foundation for Gitwe Adventist Mission. Within a few years three missionary families began a dispensary. Later, H Monnier of Switzerland came, stayed 20 years, learned the language, and translated large portions of the Bible. Although a small country, Rwanda has a large concentration of Seventh-day Adventists.
