  Portugal
Description
Occupying the western side of Europe's Iberian Peninsula, Portugal includes two archipelagos colonized in the Atlantic Ocean. The Azores, 750 miles west of Lisbon, the capital city, are nine islands and many small islets; while Madeira, nearly 600 miles southwest of Portugal and off the coast of northern Africa, has two islands and several uninhabited islets. Seventh-day Adventists were first introduced through a literature ministry and have been supported by a publishing house for 75 years. Youth from its five schools spend each summer reaching into a new community. The Assistencia Social Adventista owns and operates a home for the elderly and cares for others in their own homes.
