  Puerto Rico
Description
A self-governing commonwealth in association with the United States of America, Puerto Rico has remained primarily Hispanic in culture. Both Spanish and English are official languages in this nation which was ceded to the United States following the Spanish-American War. The famous "Operation Bootstrap," begun in the 1940's, changed the island from "Poorhouse of the Caribbean" to one with the highest per capita income in the Caribbean. Divided into two conferences, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Puerto Rico maintains the Antillian Adventist University and the Bella Vista Hospital in Mayaguez, six academies, and four clinics. Two Bible Correspondence Schools follow up interests generated by one television and two radio stations.
