  Nepal
Description
Landlocked between India and China's Tibet, Nepal has been greatly influenced by cultures found in both its neighboring countries. Although the Buddha was born in southern Nepal, Nepal's official religion is Hinduism. Christians in Nepal share their faith at the risk of imprisonment in this nation where it is illegal to convert to Christianity. Baptisms are held in fear, because both the pastor and parishioner are subject to fine and imprisonment. Thus, growth in the more than 40 years since Stanley Sturges studied Nepalese in India before moving to open a clinic and later a hospital at Banepa, has been slow. A 65-bed hospital, Scheer Memorial, is served by seven resident physicians who meet the special needs of the population. ADRA is assisting with village medical needs and medical teams who provide short-term specialties such as cleft lip and cleft palate treatment, as well as a development program from Kathmundu. Adventist World Radio covers the country with a Nepalese program. The hospital, school, and orphanage provide first-class service in this basically closed country.
