| Densely populated Japan (863 per square mile) is an archipelago of more than 4,000 islands across a fault line off the eastern coast of mainland Asia. Japan's legendary history includes both a refined cultural tradition and Shinto as the indigenous polytheistic religion. Although Christianity arrived in Japan more than 400 years ago, less than 0.8 percent of the total population are Christian. Growth has been slow, but steady. Today, three out of every four in the Seventh-day Adventist family are over 30 years of age. However, in recent times one of six baptisms in the country has come from our schools. Through the Five-Day to Stop Smoking Plan, Adventists have also helped reduce the number of smokers by 30 percent. | ||||||||||||||||||
